Sri Gokulam Goshala

Gho Samrakshanam (Protection and worship of cows)

गावः सवसुखप्रदाः
Gaavaha Sarva Sukha Pradha - Cows are the givers of all happiness.

The vision of Sri Gokulam Goshala is to protect and preserve India’s native breeds from extinction. Through committed conservation efforts, nine traditional breeds have been successfully preserved so far.

The Goshala

Sri Gokulam Goshala is located on the banks of river Kaveri, in the holy town of Govindapuram, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu. It is built on 20 acres of land and shelters more than 1000 indigeneuos cows of which around 450 are abandoned cows which are rescued and sheltered.

The Cows

The cows residing in Sri Gokulam Goshala are truly special. Many have been brought from sacred lands such as Dwaraka in Gujarat and Sri Brindavan in Uttar Pradesh, and are believed to be descendants of the divine herds once grazed by Lord Sri Krishna Himself. The Indian breeds here are known not only for their purity but also for the immense spiritual and medicinal value of their milk, dung, and urine— each of which has been traditionally recognized for its healing properties. To preserve these sacred bloodlines, Indian cows are bred only with Indian bulls. Each cow is said to emit a positive aura extending up to ten meters around it, creating an atmosphere of peace and sanctity within the Goshala.

Krupa Patra - The Mission of Compassion

Under the noble initiative called Krupa Patra, the Samsthan actively rescues abandoned and injured cows, preventing them from being sent to slaughterhouses and providing them with lifelong shelter and care. So far, over 450 cows have been rescued and lovingly rehabilitated under this compassionate mission.

The Infrastructure

Sri Gokulam Goshala’s infrastructure is designed with the utmost care, keeping the comfort and hygiene of the cows as its top priority. The sheds are equipped with fans and water sprinklers to maintain a pleasant temperature even in hot and humid conditions. Veterinary doctors are available 24/7 within the premises to ensure continuous health monitoring and prompt medical care for all cows.

The Caretakers

The Goshala is lovingly maintained by 40 dedicated workers from Orissa, who consider their work a sacred seva rather than a profession. Their day begins with prayers to the cows, followed by their daily duties performed with deep devotion and discipline. The entire Goshala is kept impeccably clean—so much so that one could comfortably sit and eat within its premises. After a long day of service, the workers gather for bhajans in the Goshala, ending their day in devotion and gratitude. Their service embodies selflessness, faith, and unwavering love for the divine cows.
